Radar imagery as of mid-afternoon indicated that an area of heavy rain is pushing northward across southern Connecticut and southern Rhode Island. It is expected that heavy rain will rapidly overspread the entire area from south to north starting across areas near and south of the Mass Pike by 4 pm and then reaching areas near Route 2 by 5 pm. Heavy rain is then expected to continue right into a majority of tonight. That said, the heaviest rainfall appears that it’ll occur between 7 pm and midnight or so. In addition to this, there’s expected to be enough unstable air around so that some isolated thunderstorms are likely. Any thunderstorms that do occur this evening will produce extremely heavy rainfall and localized flooding. Rain is expected to gradually come to an end between 4 am and 6 am Monday morning. Rainfall totals from late this afternoon through tonight will range between 1 and 2 inches with localized amounts of up to 3 inches possible. Reports from southern Connecticut and southern Rhode Island indicate that torrential rainfall is now occurring there leading to very poor travel conditions. This means that I want you to be aware that extremely poor travel conditions are likely once the rain begins across the area during the 5-6 pm hour due to very heavy rain. These very poor travel conditions are likely to continue through tonight due to very poor travel conditions caused by heavy rain, road flooding and low visibilities.

For Tonight: An area of high pressure will move to the east while an area of low pressure takes shape off of the Mid-Atlantic Coast. Skies tonight will be cloudy and any rain with that low pressure system to the south will hold off from moving in until during the day on Saturday. Low temperatures will be near 45 Degrees. Winds will be East to Southeast at 5 to 10 mph. Saturday & Saturday Night: That low pressure system will slowly move northeastward towards our area during the day on Saturday and then across the area during Saturday night. Periods of rain will overspread the region during Saturday morning with most areas seeing rain throughout Saturday afternoon. Rain is then expected to continue through all of Saturday night. Rainfall totals with the rain during Saturday and Saturday night will average around one half of an inch (0.50”). High temperatures Saturday will be between 50 and 55 Degrees. Low temperatures Saturday night will be near 45 Degrees. Winds on Saturday will be East at 10 to 20 mph. Winds on Saturday night will be East at 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. Sunday Through Monday: A brief break in the steady rainfall is expected for a few hours on Sunday. That said, there’s likely to still be enough low-level moisture around for some drizzle and even some scattered showers during the day on Sunday. A round of heavy rainfall is expected to overspread the entire area during the early evening hours of Sunday. This heavy rainfall is then likely to continue through much of the night on Sunday night before it comes to an end early Monday morning. Rainfall totals Sunday night are expected to average between 1 and 2 inches across the entire area. High temperatures Sunday will be near 60 Degrees. Low temperatures Sunday night will be between 50 and 55 Degrees. Winds on Sunday will be East at 10 to 20 mph. Winds on Sunday night will be East to Southeast at 15 to 25 mph. Monday looks like it’ll be a generally cloudy day, but there could be some peeks of sunshine from time to time. High temperatures Monday will be near 65 Degrees. Tuesday through Thursday: An upper level low pressure system is expected to control the weather throughout Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. This means that the weather on all three days will be pretty much the same. Tuesday looks generally cloudy with some scattered afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms. High temperatures will be between 55 and 60 Degrees. Wednesday looks generally cloudy with scattered afternoon showers and possible thunderstorms. High temperatures will be between 55 and 60 Degrees. More of the same for Thursday with cloudy skies and the chance for some scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. High temperatures will be near 55 Degrees.

For Tonight: Cloudy skies this evening will give way to partly cloudy skies late tonight as the atmosphere loses some of its instability. Low temperatures will be between 35 and 40 Degrees. Winds will be Northwest at 5 to 10 mph. Tuesday: A fairly robust piece of upper level energy will traverse the region during the afternoon hours. This will combine with an unstable air mass to produce scattered shower and thunderstorm activity throughout the afternoon hours. I expect to see some early morning sunshine give way to building cumulus clouds by mid and late morning. This will lead to scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the area during much of the afternoon. Some of heavier showers and thunderstorms will be capable to producing small hail. This shower and thunderstorm activity is likely to diminish and end by sunset Tuesday. High temperatures will be near 55 Degrees. Winds will be Northwest at 5 to 10 mph. Wednesday Through Friday: Unsettled weather looks like it will continue through the second half of this week. Wednesday looks partly sunny with some scattered showers during the afternoon. High temperatures will be near 60 Degrees. Winds will be North at 5 to 10 mph in the morning and South at 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Much more in the way of showers looks likely for Wednesday night with low temperatures near 40 Degrees. Thursday is expected to be cloudy with scattered showers. High temperatures will be near 55 Degrees. Friday looks partly sunny with high temperatures near 60 Degrees. Weekend Weather: It looks like a rather robust frontal system will affect the weather as soon as later Sunday. Saturday looks partly sunny with high temperatures between 55 and 60 Degrees. Skies will become cloudy by Sunday morning with rain moving in during the afternoon and evening. It appears that rain will continue through Sunday night and much of next Monday. The rain could be heavy at times.
