As of the time of this post, thunderstorms currently stretch from about Belchertown and the south end of the Quabbin southeastward into Ware, Warren, Palmer and then eastward into West Brookfield & New Braintree. These thunderstorms are generally move to the east and east-southeast at a forward speed of about 20 mph.

It appears that many towns of the Worcester Hills along and just north of the Mass Pike will be affected by these thunderstorms over the next hour. This includes Brimfield, Sturbridge, Charlton, the Brookfields, Spencer, Paxton, Oakham, Worcester and Auburn.

Heavy downpours will be the main threat with these thunderstorms. That said, some locally heavy rain and perhaps some hail will accompany the stronger of the storms. Some lightning is also possible with some of the storms as well.

For This Afternoon & Tonight: Very warm temperatures are expected throughout this afternoon under a mixture of some sunshine and lots of clouds. Temperatures this afternoon will be between 84 and 89 Degrees. Dew point temperatures will be in the middle 60s. Winds will be Southwest at around 10 mph.

I do want to mention that weather analysis at the time of this post revealed a complex of thunderstorms now located over southeastern Ontario province & southwestern Quebec province. These thunderstorms are moving to the southeast & are likely to affect parts of of our area during this evening. Before then though, I do think that we could see a few showers and thunderstorms moving across our area during late this afternoon. Any of these thunderstorms will have the potential to produce heavy downpours.

Turning to tonight, that large complex of thunderstorms is expected to reach our area by early this evening. Given the forward movement of these storms, it appears that Western Mass has the higher chance of seeing these thunderstorms between about 7 pm and 10 pm. These thunderstorms will primarily produce heavy downpours as they will be weakening as they move through. The air mass across the region is expected to be rather stable & because of this, strong or severe thunderstorms are not expected. Additionally, even though most of the thunderstorms look to affect Western Mass this evening, it’s possible that a stray thunderstorm or two could also affect Central Mass between about 7 pm and 10 pm this evening.

Low temperatures tonight will be around 65 Degrees. Winds will be Southwest at 10 to 20 mph.

Wednesday: A stretch of very hot and humid weather is expected to begin on Wednesday and continue through Thursday, Friday and the Fourth of July. This heat and humidity will be no joke & extreme care needs to be exercised if you need to be outdoors for any extended length of time.

Partly sunny skies are expected throughout the day on Wednesday. High temperatures will be between 90 and 95 Degrees. Dew point temperatures will be in the lower 70s. Heat index readings by Wednesday afternoon will be around 100 Degrees.

The air mass is likely to become much more unstable by Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening due to the heat and humidity. At the same time this is occurring, it appears that another complex of thunderstorms may form over southern Ontario and western Quebec provinces during late Wednesday afternoon. These storms may push southeastward & affect parts of our area during Wednesday evening. At this point, Western Mass has the highest chance of seeing these thunderstorms between about 10 pm and 1 am. It’s possible that a couple of these thunderstorms could be on the strong side & be capable of producing gusty winds, torrential downpours and frequent lightning.

Thursday: The worst days in terms of heat and humidity are expected to be Thursday and Friday.

Sunny to partly sunny skies are expected throughout the day on Thursday & it will be very hot and humid. High temperatures will be around 100 Degrees. Dew point temperatures will be between 70 and 75 Degrees. Heat index readings by Thursday afternoon will be a dangerous 110 Degrees. It should be noted that the Connecticut River Valley may have high temperatures of around 105 Degrees on Thursday with heat index readings of 115 Degrees.

Friday: Dangerous heat and humidity is expected on Friday with high temperatures of around 100 Degrees and dew point temperatures of 70 to 75 Degrees. Heat index readings by Friday afternoon will be around 110 Degrees. The Connecticut River Valley may have 105 Degree high temperatures on Friday with heat index readings of around 115 Degrees.

Skies during the day on Friday will be sunny to partly sunny. It’s possible that scattered thunderstorms will affect the entire area during the mid and late afternoon hours. Given that the air mass is going to be very unstable, I do think that some of these thunderstorms will be on the strong to severe side with very gusty winds, hail, torrential downpours and frequent lightning.

This Weekend: The Fourth of July looks partly sunny & there may be some late afternoon and evening scattered thunderstorms. Some of these thunderstorms might be on the strong to severe side. It will once again be very hot and humid with high temperatures of around 95 Degrees and dew point temperatures in the low 70s. Heat index readings will be near 105 Degrees.

Sunday looks partly sunny & it’ll be hot and humid. In addition, there may be some afternoon and evening scattered thunderstorms. Some of these thunderstorms could be on the strong to severe side. High temperatures will be near 90 Degrees. Dew point temperatures will be around 65 Degrees. Heat index readings will be around 95 Degrees.
