A round of scattered thunderstorms can be expected across all of Western and Central Mass beginning about mid-afternoon and lasting into early this evening.
A backdoor cold front is expected to push southwestward into the region this afternoon and help to fire off these scattered thunderstorms.
Current indications are that we'll see thunderstorms first develop over the northern Worcester Hills and also across Western Mass by about 2-3 pm this afternoon. These thunderstorms will gradually push into the remaining parts of Central Mass, including the Worcester Metro and the entire Mass Pike corridor by about 4 pm or so.
Scattered thunderstorms will then persist across the entire area right through late this afternoon and early this evening before ending by about 9 pm this evening.
The threats from the thunderstorms this afternoon into early this evening will include wind gusts of up to 50 mph, heavy downpours which may lead to street, highway and poor drainage flooding - especially in areas that see repeating thunderstorm activity and frequent lightning. The hail and tornado threat looks extremely low.
I'll be watching things closely and will have updates as needed.
