Unfortunately, our moderate to severe drought conditions are expected to continue for at least the next couple of weeks. All of the data that I’ve looked at indicates no meaningful rainfall is likely anytime soon.
At this point, all of Western Mass is in moderate drought conditions and may trend towards severe drought conditions very soon.
As for Central Mass, moderate drought conditions are being reported across western and southwestern parts of Worcester County. Severe drought conditions are being reported across northern, eastern and southeastern parts of Worcester County. This may trend towards severe drought conditions shortly across all of Worcester County due to the high heat expected for later next week.
What is it going to take to put a big dent in our drought? There are a few things that could put a dent in our drought – First, a tropical storm or a hurricane moving through the area would definitely bring the rainfall we need; Second would be a big, very wet storm system that moves through the area. Unfortunately, we usually don’t start seeing these until about the very end of September, October and November; Third would be a very wet or a very snowy winter and unfortunately, we’re still about 4 months away to see that sort of weather.
