A major winter storm is expected to impact all of Western and Central Mass beginning this evening and continuing through all of tonight and into much of Thursday. One foot or more of snowfall is expected across the entire area.
What Time Will The Snow Begin? I expect that snow will overspread the entire area between 8 pm and 10 pm this evening.
When Is The Worst Part Of The Storm Expected? Between about midnight tonight and about 6-8 am Thursday morning. Snowfall rates upwards of 2 to 3 inches per hour are expected at times leading to whiteout conditions. In addition, there is also a chance for a rumble or two of thunder in some of the heaviest snow bands.
Travel is expected to be extremely hazardous to nearly impossible due to the snow accumulating on the roads at a very rapid rate. In addition, expect whiteout conditions due to the very heavy snow and the expected blowing and drifting snow.
When Will The Snow End? The snow will lighten up in intensity by about 8-10 am Thursday morning with light snow expected expected to continue through midday Thursday. Snow will come to an end by 1-2 pm Thursday afternoon across Western Mass and by 2-3 pm across Central Mass Thursday afternoon.
Other Information: North to northeast winds will gust up to 25 to 35 mph at times during the entire storm leading to blowing and drifting snow.
This is still expected to be a “cold” storm with temperatures remaining in the 20 to 25 Degree range throughout the storm. This also means that this will be a light and fluffy snow.
How Much Snow Is Expected? All of Western and Central Mass are likely to see at least one foot of snow with this storm. The highest amounts of up to 18 inches and possibly more are expected across the western hilltowns of Western Mass and the Berkshires.
