Late Afternoon & Evening Scattered Strong To Severe Thunderstorms Are Expected Across Western & Central Mass

Scattered Strong To Severe Thunderstorms Are Expected Late This Afternoon & This Evening: It looks like it’s going to be a busy late afternoon and evening in terms of the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms as a strong cold front pushes through the region.

Some partial sunshine is expected for a while this afternoon and this will cause temperatures to rise into the middle 80s. These warm temperatures will combine with a very humid air mass (dew point temperatures between 70 and 75 Degrees) leading to an unstable and favorable air mass for the production of thunderstorms, some of which will be strong to severe.

A line of scattered thunderstorms is expected to move from northwest to southeast across the entire area between about 4 pm this afternoon and 9 pm this evening. Given the favorable environmental conditions, it appears very likely that some of the thunderstorms will be strong to severe. The main threats with any strong to severe thunderstorms will be wind gusts of up to 50-70 mph, torrential downpours and frequent lightning. It is possible that a couple of the more severe storms may be capable of producing up to quarter size hail.

These storms are expected to move out of our area by about 9-10 pm this evening as that strong cold front moves through.

I continue to keep very close tabs on the severe thunderstorm potential for late this afternoon and this evening & will have more updates for you as needed.
