Even More Snow Is Expected Across Western & Central Mass During Sunday & Sunday Evening

Snow Is Expected During Sunday & Sunday Evening: The forecast for Sunday and Sunday evening continues to be a real challenge as there continues to be some uncertainty as to how close a low pressure system will get to our area. That said, that amount of uncertainty in Sunday’s forecast is much less than what it was at this time yesterday.

An area of low pressure is expected to move off of the North Carolina and Virginia coasts during Sunday morning and then head northeastward passing to the east of Nantucket by Sunday evening. Even though this storm system will be a bit too far offshore to give us a major winter storm, it’ll still be close enough to bring accumulating snow during Sunday and Sunday evening across all of Western and Central Mass. The highest snow totals look to be across southern and especially southeastern Worcester County where up to 3 to 5 inches of snow looks likely.

I do think that there will be two parts to Sunday’s storm:

The first part of this storm looks to occur during Sunday morning into early Sunday afternoon. Snow will begin across the entire area around sunrise Sunday morning and then continue throughout Sunday morning before it temporarily comes to an end during early Sunday afternoon. While some light accumulations will occur with the first part of this system, I think that most of the snow accumulations with this storm will occur from late Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening.

The second part of this storm looks to occur from late Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening. The snow may actually stop for a while during the early afternoon before it begins again during the late afternoon and early evening hours. It also looks likely that there will be a period of moderate snow during Sunday evening with snowfall rates of up to one inch per hour across Central Mass.

The snow is expected to come to an end by midnight Sunday night across Western Mass and between about midnight and 3 am Sunday night across Central Mass.

My forecast snowfall map for Sunday and Sunday evening is attached to this post. I do think that most of the snow accumulations will occur between about 5 pm and 11 pm Sunday.
