Early Tuesday Afternoon Storm Update For Western & Central Mass

It is really messy out there with snow falling from much of Western Mass eastward through the Worcester Hills & a mixture of snow, rain and some sleet occurring over far southern and southeastern parts of Worcester County.

It seems right now that the demarcation line between all snow and a messy icy mixture is I-84.

Areas west and north of I-84 is currently seeing mostly all snow with reports of at least 2 to 3 inches of accumulation so far from areas in Springfield and Westfield northeastward into the Worcester Hills. Roads in these areas have been reported as slippery.

South and east of I-84, there is a messy mixture of snow and rain occurring with very little or no snow accumulation occurring so far. In fact, here in Sturbridge just off of 131, I have received very icy patches of a dusting of snow & meanwhile areas just a couple of miles west of me on the other side of I-84 have already received 2 inches of snow with all snow occurring.

The big change to the forecast is across the Pioneer Valley of Western Mass where it appears that mostly all snow is going to occur for much of this afternoon & because of this, upwards of 3 to 5 inches of total snow accumulation looks quite possible in the Pioneer Valley of Western Mass, including the Springfield Metro.

The other change to the forecast is across areas south and east of I-84, including Sturbridge and Southbridge eastward to the I-395 and Route 146 corridors where mostly all rain with some wet snow mixed in will occur throughout this afternoon. Because of this, very little, if any snow accumulation will occur.

Looking further north, areas from the southern Worcester Hills eastward through the Worcester Metro and the I-290 corridor is likely to see snow to continue for the next several hours & the snow will mix with sleet and rain at times. Total snow amounts in these areas look to be in the 3 to 5 inch range by the time the storm is done later this evening.

Across the northern Worcester Hills & the Route 2 corridor, all snow is expected throughout this afternoon into this evening with total snow amounts of 6 to 8 inches likely.

More updates will be sent out as needed.
